Donald Buglass

Donald Buglass is a New Zealand-born, multi-disciplinary artist whose practice spans sculpture, land art, painting and intervention. Born in Timaru in 1962, he has worked widely across Europe, Asia and Aotearoa, taking part in international sculpture symposia and nature-based projects.

Originally trained in painting at the National Art School in Sydney, Donald soon gravitated toward sculpture. His background is quite hands-on—ranging from cartography and aerial photography to stonemasonry, furniture design and drystone walling—and this deep material understanding continues to shape his work.

His practice is grounded in process, often allowing the material itself to guide the outcome. While much of his work engages with landscape and environmental themes, there is also a consistent thread of dry, observational humour—an interest in everyday moments and how they can be both familiar and slightly disarming.

That sensibility is evident in the work, "dog" presented here. Without embellishment or commentary, it captures a moment most people recognise, balancing weight, timing and restraint. Direct, familiar, and memorable, it reflects an artist confident enough to let the subject speak for itself.

Donald currently lives and works in New Plymouth, New Zealand.
