Based in Whanganui, Art by the River showcases established contemporary artists from across Aotearoa, bringing nationally recognised artistic voices into a welcoming regional setting. The gallery connects collectors with the breadth and depth of contemporary New Zealand art practice, presenting work of quality, character and lasting appeal.
Our exhibition programme features a changing series of solo and group exhibitions throughout the year. Each exhibition is shaped around a central idea, inviting artists to respond in diverse and engaging ways — through landscape, abstraction, figurative work, photography, mixed media and sculpture.
From atmospheric interpretations of place to more conceptual explorations of memory, identity and material, the exhibitions reflect the richness and variety of contemporary art in New Zealand today. Alongside this core programme, the gallery also presents curated exhibitions drawn from its Collectables range, including significant works by internationally recognised artists. These exhibitions sit in dialogue with the New Zealand programme, broadening the conversation while maintaining a strong local foundation.
