Max Thomson

New Zealand Landscape Artist

Max Thomson (b. 1945) is a New Zealand landscape artist whose work is grounded in memory, atmosphere and a lifelong connection to place. Born in Whanganui, Max has deep family ties to the Whanganui River and the rugged West Coast. Although he moved with his family to Auckland in the early 1960s, his formative years in provincial New Zealand continue to shape both the subject matter and emotional tone of his paintings.

The landscapes of his childhood — wide skies, weathered coastlines, shifting light and dense native growth — left an enduring imprint. That early sense of space and solitude remains visible in his work today. Whether painting trees, gardens, river margins or coastal scenes, Max returns constantly to the natural environment for inspiration. The land is not simply a backdrop in his work; it is a living presence.

Max’s creative path has been rich and varied. As a teenager he was equally drawn to painting and music, and for a period he performed professionally as a drummer. That experience sharpened his instinct for rhythm and structure — qualities that subtly underpin his compositions today. There is often a musical pacing in his paintings: areas of rest balanced against areas of visual intensity, shadow working like a bass note beneath lighter passages of colour.

Following music, Max built a long and successful career in photography. Over several decades he worked professionally in commercial and fashion photography, developing a keen understanding of light, tone and composition. This background continues to influence his painting practice. His works often feel carefully framed and decisively composed, with strong attention to tonal contrast and atmospheric depth.

Photography taught him to observe. Painting allows him to interpret.

In 2004, Max stepped away from full-time photography and returned to painting with renewed focus. What began as a re-engagement quickly became a daily practice. He has since exhibited extensively in group exhibitions and has presented multiple solo shows. Today, he paints full time, continuing to refine a distinctive and recognisable voice within contemporary New Zealand art.

Max Thomson’s paintings are known for their contemplative mood and richly worked surfaces. He often builds texture through confident brushwork and layered paint, creating depth that draws the viewer into the scene. His palette ranges from earthy ochres and deep greens to moody violets and shadowed blues. Light plays a central role — whether diffused through cloud, filtered through foliage, or striking a path after rain.

Many works begin with photographs taken during walks, particularly in places that offer a quiet interplay of light and vegetation. These photographic references serve as starting points rather than strict templates. The finished paintings are not about replication, but about distillation — capturing the emotional resonance of a moment rather than its literal detail.

A recurring theme in Max’s work is the tension between light and shadow. He is especially drawn to subdued or overcast conditions, when colour deepens and contrasts become more subtle. In these moments, everyday scenes reveal unexpected drama. A simple garden edge becomes cinematic. A stretch of riverbank becomes introspective. A stand of trees becomes almost architectural in its presence.

His long connection to Whanganui and the West Coast continues to inform this sensitivity. Those landscapes — shaped by weather and time — instilled an awareness of atmosphere that remains central to his practice. Even when painting elsewhere, there is often a sense of return embedded in the work.

Collectors are drawn to Max Thomson’s art for its balance of strength and stillness. The paintings sit comfortably in contemporary interiors while retaining a grounded sense of Aotearoa. They are works that reward time and attention — pieces that quietly deepen as you live with them.

At Art by the River, we are proud to present the work of Max Thomson to collectors seeking original New Zealand landscape paintings rich in texture, mood and authenticity. His work speaks to those who value connection — to land, to memory, and to the subtle beauty found in the everyday.

Max continues to paint with curiosity and discipline, allowing inspiration to emerge through practice. His art remains rooted in the landscapes that first shaped him, while continuing to evolve in response to light, season and experience. Through paint, he invites us to slow down and look again — to see the familiar with fresh attention.
