For more than five decades, Gilbert & George have stood as one of the most recognisable duos in contemporary art. Meeting as students at St Martin’s School of Art in London during the late 1960s, they quickly forged not only a lifelong partnership but also a unique artistic identity—presenting themselves as “living sculptures” in suits that became their uniform and trademark. Awarded the Turner Prize in 1986 and celebrated internationally with retrospectives at major museums, they are regarded as pioneers who have shaped the visual language of contemporary British art.
Their work combines photography, collage, and performance to create vivid, often provocative images that reflect on society, politics, sexuality, and the changing face of urban life. From the groundbreaking Dirty Words Pictures to their recent New Normal Pictures, Gilbert & George consistently challenge audiences while remaining committed to their principle of “art for all.”
Celebrated internationally, they have exhibited at the world’s leading institutions, from the Tate Modern in London to the Venice Biennale.
Now in their eighties, the pair continue to produce new and ambitious work. Their output remains as bold, unapologetic, and relevant as ever, securing their reputation as two of the most important and enduring voices in contemporary art.
