Created in 1972, The Green Moon is a vibrant colour lithograph from the final decade of Joan Miró's career, when the artist's distinctive visual language had reached its fullest expression. Floating forms, energetic black calligraphic lines and brilliant primary colours combine to create an image that is at once playful, poetic and unmistakably Miró.
Printed by the legendary Atelier Mourlot in Paris, the lithograph was created in close collaboration with the artist and is hand signed in pencil by Miró. Numbered XXI/LXXX (21/80), it comes from the signed edition of just 80 impressions, making it considerably scarcer than many of Miró's published lithographs.
Miró believed that colour, line and symbol could communicate directly with the imagination. Throughout his career he developed a visual vocabulary of moons, stars, birds and abstract forms that evoke the dreamlike world between reality and fantasy. The Green Moon is a fine example of this mature style, balancing spontaneity with remarkable technical precision.
Today Miró's signed lithographs are highly sought after by collectors for their joyful imagery, exceptional colour, rarity in signed editions and their importance within twentieth-century printmaking.
