Mount Awful rises 2,192 metres within Mount Aspiring National Park, northwest of Makarora in the Southern Alps. Despite its daunting name, the mountain is renowned amongst trampers and climbers for its striking form and spectacular alpine setting.

The origin of the name is uncertain, although it is thought to date from early explorers and surveyors who often bestowed dramatic names on New Zealand's rugged landscapes. Whether inspired by difficult terrain or challenging conditions, Mount Awful has become one of the South Island's more memorable place names.

In this work, Gina captures the mountain bathed in clear alpine light, its rocky slopes softened by snow patches and framed by native tussock. The painting reflects both the grandeur and accessibility of New Zealand's high country, celebrating the landscapes that continue to inspire adventure and connection with the outdoors.
