James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause)
Andy Warhol, James Dean (Rebel Without a Cause), limited edition screenprint on paper featuring James Dean against a vivid red background with Japanese text and bold Pop Art styling
Few artists explored the relationship between celebrity and popular culture as influentially as Andy Warhol. Throughout his career, he transformed familiar images of film stars, musicians, consumer products and advertising into works that became icons of Pop Art.
This edition is based on Warhol's 1985 screenprint Ads: Rebel Without a Cause (James Dean), one of ten works in his celebrated Ads portfolio. For the composition, Warhol adopted the design of the Japanese cinema poster for Rebel Without a Cause, incorporating both James Dean's portrait and the bold Japanese title typography into the finished image. Rather than simply reproducing the poster, he transformed it into a striking Pop Art composition through vivid colour, dramatic contrast and his distinctive graphic style.
The original Ads: Rebel Without a Cause (James Dean) was published in 1985 as a screenprint on Lenox Museum Board by Ronald Feldman Fine Arts and is represented in the collection of The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. This limited edition is based on that celebrated image and is signed in the plate, hand-numbered from an edition of 2,400, and bears a Carnegie Museum of Art (CMOA) mark on the reverse.
More than seventy years after Rebel Without a Cause first appeared in cinemas, James Dean remains an enduring symbol of youthful rebellion and Hollywood's Golden Age. Combined with Warhol's unmistakable visual language, this image brings together two of the twentieth century's most influential figures in art and popular culture.
