About What Becomes of the Broken Hearts?
The Anthropocene: relating to or denoting the current geological age, viewed as the period during which human activity has been the dominant influence on climate and the environment.
It seems prescient in this period of the Anthropocene to be considering suffering. The destruction of human lives by the worldwide Covid epidemic isolated people from their families unable to say their goodbyes lest they too expire. Further to this virus in 2020, the world has been beset by wars and apocalyptic human misery.
In my ceramic practice, I have long used the anatomical human heart to represent the human condition. Theodore Gericault’s The Raft of the Medusa hovered in the background as I began anthropomorphising a pile of hearts - surplus, supine, damaged, almost toppling. Where does all the energy of expended, mass suffering go? What are the long-term effects on our collective psyches?
